     Elections
 
          On 21 October 2001 new early elections took place after the Abgeordnetenhaus von Berlin (House of Representatives) resolved its dissolution on 1 September 2001. At the same time, new elections were held for the 12 Bezirksverordnetenversammlungen (Borough Assemblies). In voting for the Abgeordnetenhaus von Berlin, the first vote was cast for direct election of a candidate to one of the 78 constituencies and the second vote was to be used to vote for the state and borough lists of the respective parties. A total of 55 representatives were selected in the elections for the respective Bezirksverordnetenversammlungen.

          The parties received parliamentary seats in accordance with their share of the valid second votes. A party which won more direct parliamentary seats than it was entitled to in accordance with its share of the second votes in the entire polling area was authorised to retain such seats won in addition to the number gained through proportional representation. The other parties received as many compensatory seats as were required for allocation of the parliamentary seats in accordance with the proportion of the second votes.

          On 21 October 2001 elections were held for the first time for the Bezirksverordnetenversammlungen (Borough Assemblies) for the present 12 boroughs following the reorganisation of the region.

          On 22 September 2002 the fourth Deutscher Bundestag elections took place after reunification of the country in the year 1990.
In Berlin approximately 2.4 million citizens entitled to vote from a total 61.4 million were able to cast their votes in 12 of 299 constituencies in Germany.

          On 13 June 2004 Berliners were able to directly participate in an election for the Europäisches Parlament (European Parliament) for the third time. In the case of the European elections which took place prior to German Reunification in 1979, 1984 and 1989 the Berlin representatives in the European Parliament were determined by the Abgeordnetenhaus von Berlin (House of Representatives) in accordance with the size of the respective parliamentary groups represented there.
